What are the event details?
Date: 1-5pm Wednesday 16th June 2021, afternoon tea provided.

What is the event about?
The roundtable is a chance for CID members to get together and discuss joint advocacy in terms of:
- A shared understanding of what advocacy means for the sector (as opposed to mobilising, campaigning, marketing, or educating?)
- What different organisations do advocacy and mobilisation on (key priorities)
- The target audience; government and/or the New Zealand public (or others, eg business)
- How different organisations could best collaborate on advocacy campaigns, or join in on, or promote existing campaigns
- Determining some communication channels and next steps
- Role of partners in-country in advocacy?
- Is there an appetite for a member-led ‘Public Engagement and Advocacy Committee’?
The roundtable will inform CID’s work, and will also be a great chance for the advocacy leads of different organisations to get to know each other.

Why have this event?
- Effective advocacy is best done in conjunction with other organisations supporting the same aim, as this adds ‘greater voice’ to the issue
- The sector is diverse, but common issues exist. A coordinated advocacy approach will help identify shared advocacy themes
- Effective advocacy also reflects genuine demand from partners in-country
- Joint working can also strengthen the advocacy campaign in practical terms, as partners can bring various resources and contacts to the table
- The best advocacy campaigns take full advantage of a pivotal moment, or a window of opportunity, and this may leave little time to organise
- Effective advocacy has ‘Edge/Crunch/Lift’ – it has specificity, a clear call to action, and has the potential for popular and positive support
- Joint advocacy can only be achieved when organisations work together and it is clear who does what, or when one organisation has the resources to get a campaign up and going, but it is strongly supported and promoted by other organisations
